Japan's Atom Raises ¥3B Seed to Build Bipedal Humanoid Robots for Industry

Tokyo-based humanoid robotics startup Atom has raised approximately ¥3 billion (about $19 million) in seed funding to develop what founder Shunsuke Aoki describes as a "new species" of AI-powered humanoid robots. The round was co-led by ANRI, Beyond Next Ventures and JAFCO Group, with participation from ALPHA, JIC Venture Growth Investments, Sumisho Venture Partners, Blue Lab, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital and SMBC Venture Capital.

A Bipedal Robot Built For Existing Environments

Atom is developing fully bipedal humanoid robots intended to operate in spaces designed for humans — factories, warehouses and logistics yards. Aoki, who previously led Cyberdyne's overseas business, says the design choice is deliberate: rather than retrofit workplaces for purpose-built robots, Atom wants to deploy machines that fit existing layouts.

Targeting A 1% GDP Lift

Atom claims its long-term ambition is to add roughly one percentage point to Japanese GDP by automating tasks across manufacturing, logistics and transportation. Japan's working-age population is forecast to shrink sharply through 2040, and humanoid robotics have become a national priority alongside Chinese humanoid programs backed by Xiaomi and other strategic investors.

Use Of Funds

The capital will fund team hiring, development infrastructure and the first commercialisation efforts. Atom plans to scale toward mass production of its bipedal platform, with early deployments expected in domestic Japanese factories.

Investor Mix

The breadth of the syndicate — three traditional venture leads alongside megabank-backed funds Mitsubishi UFJ Capital and SMBC Venture Capital, plus state-affiliated JIC Venture Growth Investments — reflects rare consensus that humanoid hardware is now strategic for Japanese industry. It also positions Atom as a domestic counter-balance to the surge of foreign humanoid platforms entering the Japanese market.
