Constellation Energy has made its first strategic investment in a US small modular reactor developer, backing Texas-based Blue Energy to industrialise a shipyard-manufactured nuclear plant concept aimed squarely at surging AI data centre demand.

A First SMR Bet From The Country's Largest Nuclear Operator

The deal, disclosed by Constellation Technology Ventures on July 16, is the utility's first equity check into an SMR startup and comes as it lines up multi-gigawatt behind-the-meter deals with hyperscalers. Terms were not disclosed. Blue Energy was spun out of MIT's Nuclear Science & Engineering Department in 2023 and pitches financeable, reactor-agnostic plants that pair advanced reactors with a repeatable, factory-built plant island.

Shipyards As The New Nuclear Factory

Blue Energy's model treats plant modules as ship-scale objects, fabricating large sections inside existing US shipyards with robotic manufacturing and marine logistics, then barging them to sites for final assembly. That approach targets the two chronic weaknesses of US nuclear construction – schedule slip and cost overrun – by moving welding, piping and instrumentation into a controlled yard environment. Constellation, which runs the largest US nuclear fleet, brings operating, siting and offtake muscle to the pairing.

An SMR Roadmap Anchored By GE Vernova

The Constellation check comes on top of a $380 million growth round in April and a strategic collaboration with GE Vernova to develop multi-gigawatt gas-to-nuclear projects using GE Vernova gas turbines and BWRX-300 small modular reactors. Blue Energy has flagged early site works in Texas in 2026 with a target final investment decision in 2027, aligning with a wave of nuclear-for-AI announcements from Holtec, Entergy and Hyundai and HanmiGlobal. Europe is likewise leaning in via GE Vernova Hitachi and Velan.
