San Francisco-based backend platform Convex has closed a $57 million Series B led by Insight Partners, with participation from Etna Labs and existing investors a16z and Spark Capital. The round, announced August 4, brings Convex's total funding to $110.5 million and is pitched as the war chest for building "the reliable backend for the AI era."
A Bet On Agent-Written Software
Convex — founded in 2021 by former Dropbox infrastructure engineers Jamie Turner and James Cowling — bundles a database, server-side functions, real-time sync, search and file storage into one TypeScript environment with ACID transactions. The company argues those guarantees are why 90% of AI-generated apps built on traditional databases silently corrupt data in production, while apps built on Convex report a zero-percent failure rate in its internal testing.
Where The Money Goes
Insight Partners' investment will fund core product development, agentic tooling and hiring at Convex's San Francisco headquarters. The Series B lands amid a broader capital wave into the plumbing behind AI applications, alongside Base Power's $1B Series D and infrastructure rounds at Eliyan that reflect investor appetite for foundational AI stack layers.
Enterprise Traction
Convex says thousands of developers now ship production apps on the platform, with growth driven by AI coding agents that need transactional data guarantees to reliably synchronize state across clients. The Series B pricing implies a step-up from the company's previous rounds, though Convex declined to disclose the new valuation. Existing customer expansion — particularly among AI-native startups using tools like Cursor and Windsurf — is expected to drive Convex's next 12 months.
