Flourish Inc., a stealth-mode startup developing AI models inspired by the architecture of the human brain, has closed a $500 million round at a $2.5 billion valuation, with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos committing nearly $100 million after other investors crowded in. The financing, first reported by Wired and confirmed by SiliconANGLE on June 4, marks one of the largest first institutional rounds for a frontier AI research company this year.
A brain-inspired bet against transformer power draw
Co-founded last year by former Amazon executive Rob Williams and neuroscientist Thomas Reardon — best known as the architect of Internet Explorer and the founder of CTRL-labs, which Meta acquired for an estimated $1 billion in 2019 — Flourish is building what it calls Cortex AI. The system aims to emulate brain function by mapping real neurons and their connections through connectomics, with the explicit goal of cutting AI model power draw by more than an order of magnitude versus current GPU-driven large language models.
Bezos doubles down as Alphabet, Lux and Catalio join
Bezos initially committed about $50 million but nearly doubled his stake after the consortium filled out, the company said. Alphabet's GV venture arm, Lux Capital and healthcare-focused fund Catalio Capital Management led the rest of the syndicate. Flourish will equip an in-house neuroscience lab with electron microscopes — SEM, TEM and hybrid instruments — to study cortical columns, the small repeating neuron structures believed to drive cortical information processing.
The product plan: continuously learning AI on consumer devices
Flourish told Wired it expects a model architecture breakthrough within five years. Nearer term, the company plans to ship a "continuously learning" model on consumer devices and is in talks with an unnamed chipmaker about a dedicated processor. Reardon's pitch puts Flourish alongside other heterodox-architecture players such as Cartesia AI on state space models and Meta's JEPA for robotics — a small but growing camp arguing that pushing past transformer scaling will require new substrates. The raise also lands in the same week as Generalist AI's $400M round and Bezos's $10B Project Prometheus bet, underlining the magnitude of capital flowing into AI foundation infrastructure.
