Spanish semiconductor startup iPronics has raised $125 million from a syndicate that includes NVIDIA, capital that the Valencia-based company will spend on scaling programmable photonic chips for AI data-center networking.
Why NVIDIA Is Writing Photonics Checks
AI clusters are getting bigger — hundreds of thousands of accelerators, not thousands — and the bottleneck is no longer raw GPU FLOPS but how fast those chips can talk to each other. Faster accelerators produce diminishing returns when interconnects can't keep up, which turns switches, transceivers and optics into strategic pieces of the AI stack. NVIDIA has spent 2025-26 investing across every rung of that stack, and iPronics slots into the networking layer above the GPU package.
SmartLight: A Programmable Photonic Chip
iPronics was spun out of the Universitat Politècnica de València in 2019 to commercialize programmable photonic integrated circuits — general-purpose optical processors that use light rather than electrical signals to move data. Its flagship SmartLight Processor is a C-band photonic chip with 72 tuning units arranged in a hexagonal mesh and 64 input/output ports. iPronics claims the design can use up to 10x less power and run 20x faster than electrical equivalents in the same footprint.
Europe Gains A Sovereign Silicon-Photonics Player
The round is also politically salient. Europe has been trying to build sovereign semiconductor capability for years, and photonics — where the U.S. currently lacks a dominant NVIDIA-scale champion — is one of the few semiconductor niches where European IP still leads. iPronics joins Ayar Labs, Lightmatter, Celestial AI and Q.ANT as the small but growing group of photonic-networking startups now competing for hyperscaler design wins.
Applications Beyond AI
The company's technology also has uses in 5G/6G wireless, quantum computing, autonomous driving and secure defense communications. That optionality helped it attract industrial investors: iPronics has previously raised from Amadeus Capital Partners and European deep-tech funds.
