Mariana Minerals is deploying Boston Dynamics' quadruped robot Spot at its Copper One facility near Moab, Utah — a step the company positions as the operational proof for what it calls the world's first end-to-end autonomous mine and refinery.
Spot replaces manual plant walks
The Copper One facility previously relied on human operators to walk the plant on foot for routine inspections. Mariana Minerals said on July 23, 2026 that Spot is now automating those rounds, streaming environmental and process data back to a control room while keeping people out of hazardous zones. The company describes the shift as a way to eliminate certain personal protective equipment and physical guards altogether by removing operators from the risk area.
Why copper needs a different playbook
Mariana frames the deployment in the context of a widening copper supply gap. Existing copper operations are getting harder to sustain, new supply is more expensive and slower to bring online, and demand is accelerating from electrification, renewable energy, grid expansion and industrial growth. Market forecasts anticipate a structural shortfall approaching ten million tons if new capacity fails to materialize quickly. The company argues that closing that gap requires a "fundamentally different approach" built on autonomy, software and operational intelligence — not incremental headcount.
Spot's steady march into industrial plants
Spot has become the reference platform for automated plant inspection since Boston Dynamics released it commercially in 2020, patrolling refineries, chemical plants, substations and construction sites for clients including BP, Purdue, and now a growing roster of high-visibility deployments. Hyundai Motor Group's continued control of Boston Dynamics has kept Spot on aggressive commercial expansion even as the humanoid Atlas grabs headlines.
What comes next at Copper One
Mariana said Spot supports data collection for high-purity cathode production and can safely navigate rugged terrain to capture critical environmental readings. "Today, autonomous vehicles navigate cities. We launch and land rockets autonomously. Autonomous weapons will soon define the battlefield, and humanoid robots will soon deliver services in factories and at home. Mariana Copper One is the first mine in the world that will demonstrate what end-to-end autonomy will deliver in mining," the company said.
