Redefine Surgery Closes $10M Pre-Seed, Names Catalyst OrthoScience Partner

Edison, New Jersey startup Redefine Surgery has closed an oversubscribed $10 million pre-seed round and named Catalyst OrthoScience as its founding partner in shoulder replacement, betting that "physical AI" – a fusion of computer vision, generative models and portable robotics – can bring a data-driven layer to orthopaedic operating theatres. The company announced the round on September 24.

A Surgeon-Led Round

The pre-seed was raised predominantly from a syndicate of practising surgeon investors. Redefine chief executive Peter Verrillo described the two announcements as "important steps toward bringing surgical intelligence into everyday practice." Dr Anthony Miniaci, a member of the founding clinical committee, said the next generation of surgical guidance would function as "an intelligent partner and collaborator to the surgeon," rather than a passive robotic tool.

Why Shoulders First

Catalyst OrthoScience, a Naples, Florida specialist behind the stemless Archer Shoulder platform, joins as founding partner in shoulder – a segment where preoperative planning, glenoid positioning and soft-tissue balancing already generate rich imaging and instrument data. The partnership will build "an integrated surgical intelligence ecosystem" that links imaging, decision support and outcomes across the full episode of care, echoing themes we tracked in our reporting on Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci 5 rollout.

Fits the Regulatory Moment

The launch lands the same week the FDA issued draft premarket-submission guidance for robotically-assisted surgical devices, a policy shift we covered in our FDA RASD analysis. Redefine's "portable" platform pitch – a small footprint that travels between surgical theatres – contrasts with the table-integrated approach we profiled in the Medtronic Hugo clearance file and could ease FDA de novo review under the new draft rules.

What's Next

Redefine says its Vision System module will begin surgeon-in-the-loop evaluations before year-end, with additional founding partners in knee and hip expected to be named at AAOS 2027. Investors will want to see hard evidence that surgeon-led rounds convert to hospital procurement – a challenge that has held back several previous physical-AI surgical startups tracked in our dental robotics coverage.
