Siemens Energy will manufacture the high-pressure steam turbines and valve casings for the first three Rolls-Royce SMR small modular reactors at the Gwyndod Power Station on Anglesey, the two companies confirmed on September 4, 2026. The work will be done at Siemens Energy's historic CA Parsons Works in Newcastle upon Tyne, marking the first time SMR turbine components will be built anywhere in Europe.

A UK-built supply chain for the UK's first SMRs

The announcement was made at the CA Parsons Works site in the presence of UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Miatta Fahnbulleh and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds. The plant, opened in 1889 by Sir Charles Algernon Parsons, previously built the turbine for Calder Hall in West Cumbria, the world's first commercial nuclear power station. The Gwyndod deal will support more than 550 jobs and re-shore work that would otherwise have gone overseas, according to Rolls-Royce SMR.

A 470 MWe factory-built reactor

Each Rolls-Royce SMR unit is a 470 megawatt-electric pressurised water reactor designed to be built in factory modules and assembled on site. Ninety percent of the plant is pre-fabricated, and each unit produces enough electricity to power around one million homes for 60 years. Siemens Energy was named as the sole global turbine systems partner for the reactor back in February 2025, and will supply steam turbines, generators and auxiliary systems across the whole Rolls-Royce SMR fleet.

From Wales to the Czech Republic to Sweden

Rolls-Royce SMR was picked by Great British Energy - Nuclear (GBE-N) in June 2025 as the UK government's preferred SMR technology and in April 2026 signed a contract with GBE-N for site-specific design work at Wylfa on Anglesey, later named Gwyndod Power Station. Czech utility ČEZ, which took a 20% stake in Rolls-Royce SMR in October 2024 and signed an early works agreement for Temelín, has also lined up two additional Czech sites. Vattenfall has shortlisted the design for a Swedish fleet, and the Newcastle line will also serve those export projects.

Reindustrialising the UK's nuclear base

"This is what reindustrialisation looks like," said Nuclear Industry Association chief executive Tom Greatrex, calling the deal a vote of confidence in industrial Britain. Rolls-Royce SMR CEO Chris Cholerton framed the announcement as delivering on the company's commitment to localisation, while Siemens Energy UK Vice President Darren Davidson said the site was preparing to make "the next generation of steam turbines for small modular reactors". A final investment decision on the UK fleet is expected in 2029, following the recent Nordic SMR activity and broader European licensing race.
