Meta is hiring Dave Brown, the senior AWS executive who led Amazon's EC2 compute and AI services business, to run the Facebook parent's fast-expanding data-center program, according to a Wall Street Journal report confirmed by GeekWire.
From AWS S-Team To Menlo Park
Brown spent almost 19 years at Amazon and most recently served as an AWS senior vice president on the S-team. His departure was quietly announced by AWS CEO Matt Garman last week and takes effect at the end of July. At Meta, Brown will report to infrastructure chief Santosh Janardhan, who co-leads Meta Compute — an initiative Mark Zuckerberg launched in January to plan the company's data-center buildout.
$125 - $145 Billion Capex Behind The Hire
Meta has told investors it will spend between $125 billion and $145 billion on capital expenditures in 2026, the vast majority of it tied to AI training servers, networking, power capacity and hyperscale data-center facilities. Zuckerberg told shareholders in May that companies were regularly asking to pay Meta for access to its models or spare compute capacity — a business that would put Meta head-to-head with AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.
Non-Compete Landscape Has Shifted
AWS has previously used the courts to enforce non-competes against departing executives — most notably against two AWS leaders who left for Google Cloud in 2019 and 2020 — but such agreements have become far harder to enforce. California bans them almost entirely, and Washington enacted a near-total ban this year that takes effect in mid-2027. Brown will be replaced at AWS by longtime Amazon and Microsoft veteran Dave Treadwell.
The Brown hire follows a wave of hyperscaler dealmaking covered by The Robotics Media, including the White House AI Cybersecurity Coordination Group joining Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta and Nvidia, and China's WAICO push in Shanghai.
