Airbus announced on 21 July 2026 at Farnborough International Airshow that it is launching a new three-year flight-test campaign for its Wing of Tomorrow (WoT) programme, one of the European manufacturer's largest research and technology efforts and the wing that is expected to sit under its next-generation single-aisle aircraft.
Full-Scale Extensions On A Flying A321neo
Over the next three years, Airbus will design, build and flight test full-scale wing extensions that will be installed on an A321neo test aircraft. Each extension, several metres long, mimics a folding wing in its fully deployed position and is packed with sensors to measure aerodynamic behaviour, structural response and aircraft handling with a much longer span than today's narrow-bodies. Digital modelling and wind-tunnel work is finalising the geometries before the tests move into the sky.
"The wing is one of the biggest levers we have to improve flight efficiency, which is why the Wing of Tomorrow is so critical for our next generation single aisle aircraft," said Sue Partridge, Airbus head of the Wing of Tomorrow programme. "This flight-test campaign will allow us to safely challenge traditional design limits and explore the benefits of longer wings."
UK Assembly, Toulouse Flight Line

The extensions will be built at Airbus's Wing Technology Development Centre at Filton in the UK and flight tested in Toulouse, France. Airbus has already produced three 17-metre ground-based demonstrators as part of the programme, which has been backed by £227 million from the UK Aerospace Technology Institute since 2014. In parallel, Airbus UpNext is nearing completion of its eXtra Performance WING demonstrator, a remotely piloted testbed for shape-changing wings that is set to fly by the end of 2026.
Race For Efficiency In The Next Single-Aisle
Longer, lighter and more slender wings can meaningfully lower fuel burn on narrow-bodies that already account for the bulk of global aviation emissions. The Wing of Tomorrow flight campaign puts Airbus one experimental step ahead of Boeing on next-gen single-aisle design work, and complements other 2026 Farnborough announcements including IndiGo's 1,000-engine LEAP-1A order and BOC Aviation's 300 CFM LEAP order for its A320neo and 737 MAX fleet.
