Joby Aviation completed what it calls the first-ever autonomous flight across the United States on September 18, 2026, ferrying a modified Cessna Caravan more than 3,100 miles with a supervisory pilot on board only for FAA compliance. The company says autonomous systems handled every phase of the mission — taxiing, takeoff, en-route navigation and landing — with remote monitoring from Joby's California headquarters and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.
A defense-grade demonstration
The flight is a public advertisement to a very specific customer set: the US Department of Defense. Joby has a $17 million AFWERX contract to develop autonomous flight capabilities, a 2025 partnership agreement with L3Harris Technologies, and closed the $500 million acquisition of RF and electronic warfare specialist Resonant Sciences in August 2026. The 3,100-mile cross-country trip is essentially the go/no-go milestone that operationalizes those relationships.
Applications Joby is now selling
Joby is now openly describing four beachheads that go well beyond its long-standing air-taxi pitch: medical transport, disaster response, defense logistics and commercial freight. The company is planning a multi-city return route in coming weeks with stops that include Louisville, Kentucky and Salt Lake City, functioning as a two-week roadshow for pilot customers.
Why the Caravan, not the eVTOL
Using a certified Cessna Caravan rather than the Joby S4 eVTOL keeps the demonstration on well-understood aerodynamics and FAA paperwork, isolating the autonomy stack as the story. It also gives Joby a payload-carrying, range-relevant airframe that can plausibly be sold to the DoD long before the S4 eVTOL is cleared for FAA passenger service — a shift in commercial center of gravity that Joby has been telegraphing since 2025.

The Joby flight lands in the same news week as Anduril's continued expansion of autonomous ISR platforms, Saildrone's armed autonomous surface vessels, and Icarus Robotics' microgravity JOY tests.
