Amazon has quietly turned on Prime Air drone delivery in Baton Rouge, making Louisiana's capital the first city in the state to receive automated MK30 drops - and Amazon's newest anchor in a nationwide network that now spans six states plus new Missouri and Florida markets.
Cortana Place Fulfillment Center Becomes Louisiana's First Drone Hub
Prime-eligible customers within a 7.5-mile radius of Amazon's BTR1 fulfilment center on Cortana Place, just off Airline Highway, can now choose Drone Delivery at checkout and pick from a front-yard, back-yard or driveway drop spot. Once the order is placed, Amazon's MK30 drone flies to the address, scans the drop zone for obstructions with onboard sensors, then lowers packages weighing up to 5 pounds. Amazon confirmed the launch in a July 7 news release, with WBRZ reporting the service went live for Louisiana customers on Tuesday.
As with other markets, drone flights are restricted to specific weather and temperature windows, and delivery requires a compatible drop zone. Amazon has said it wants to reach roughly 30 million households globally with drone delivery by the end of the decade.
A Growing MK30 Network
Baton Rouge joins active Prime Air markets that now include Phoenix, Detroit, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Waco (Texas), Tampa (Florida) and Kansas City (Missouri). Every city runs off the fifth-generation MK30 - Amazon's quieter, longer-range delivery drone type-certified by the FAA and cleared for beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) flight after a multi-year certification push.
Amazon Vs. the Delivery-Drone Field
The Baton Rouge rollout keeps pressure on rival Zipline, which is expanding across Texas with Wonder and building a Tampa Bay healthcare delivery network with BayCare. Ireland's Manna also just picked Tulsa for its 1,000-job U.S. push. Amazon's advantage remains vertical integration - its own fulfilment centres, own drone, and increasingly, its own FAA certifications - which lets Prime Air light up new cities faster than partnership-first rivals.
What's Next
Amazon has publicly said it wants to scale Prime Air aggressively in 2026, and Baton Rouge's mid-year turn-on is another data point. Expect additional Gulf Coast and Southeast metros to join the network next as the company chases denser MK30 route density around each fulfilment center it operates.
