Atom Computing has raised more than $300 million to accelerate its push toward fault-tolerant, utility-scale quantum computers, the neutral-atom specialist announced June 16. The haul includes a $100 million Series C led by Third Point Ventures and a signed letter of intent with the U.S. Department of Commerce for another $100 million.
A different kind of quantum machine
Rather than the golden chandeliers and dilution refrigerators that cool superconducting qubits, Atom's systems use optical tables and lasers to trap and manipulate arrays of neutral atoms. The approach is widely viewed as one of the most credible routes to scaling logical qubits. Founded in 2018, the company runs a data center in Boulder, Colorado, hosting several systems, including its AC1000 platform with more than 1,200 physical qubits.
Investors bet on fault tolerance
The Series C drew DCVC and Cisco Investments alongside lead Third Point Ventures, lifting Atom's total raised to more than $300 million. "Neutral-atom quantum computing is one of the most credible paths to fault-tolerant systems at scale," said Curtis McKee, partner at Third Point Ventures, pointing to commercial breakthroughs in cybersecurity, defense, drug discovery and financial modeling. CEO Dr. Ben Bloom said the company is "accelerating the development of utility-scale quantum computers and expanding access to our technology."
From lab to commercial deployment
Atom is working with Microsoft to deploy a large-scale quantum computer in Denmark, due to go live next year as its first commercial on-premises system. The funding will fund higher qubit counts, better fidelity, and expanded government and enterprise deployments. The round lands amid a wave of quantum capital that also includes IBM's $10 billion roadmap, Microsoft's Majorana 2 chip and OQC's London quantum-AI data center.
