The United States, United Kingdom and Australia have launched a new trilateral signature project under the AUKUS pact to develop next-generation capabilities for unmanned underwater vehicles, with first deliveries scheduled for 2027. The effort was unveiled in a joint statement on May 30, 2026 after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, UK Defense Secretary John Healey and Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles met on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

Interchangeable Payloads for UUV Fleets

The project sits under Pillar 2 of AUKUS, which focuses on advanced and emerging capabilities including AI, undersea systems, quantum, hypersonics and electronic warfare. The three nations will co-develop "cutting-edge payloads and enabling systems" — sensors, navigation tools, offensive strike modules and common control systems — engineered to be interchangeable across each navy's UUV fleet. According to the official fact sheet, the partners also expect to converge on shared standards and concepts of operation so that British, American and Australian drones can plug into the same mission stack.

Anti-Submarine Warfare and Critical Seabed Defense

Officials framed the initiative as a force multiplier for crewed platforms, with applications spanning anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, mine countermeasures, electronic warfare, contested littoral maneuver and the protection of seabed cables and pipelines. The signature project arrives as US Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle pushes a "hedge strategy" built around networks of robotic and autonomous systems to grow fleet capacity without expanding crew demand.

Industrial Base and License-Free Environment

The joint statement also signals tighter industrial base collaboration, including an expansion of the AUKUS license-free environment to shorten the list of excluded technologies that today require export approvals. The move is meant to accelerate the flow of undersea drone hardware, software and payloads between the partner nations as they respond to China's growing maritime presence in the Indo-Pacific.

The undersea drone signature project builds on previous AUKUS work on autonomous warfare programs, complementing recent maritime drone initiatives such as Saronic's Marauder MUSV, the US Navy's MUSV marketplace demos, and L3Harris's Iver4 900 AUV work with the Defense Innovation Unit.
