San Francisco startup Avatar Robotics said on August 5, 2026 that it has closed a $6.5 million Seed round led by New York-based venture firm AlleyCorp, with follow-on cheques from earlier backers defy.vc and Headline. The round funds expanded fleet deployments and further work on the company's teleoperation-plus-autonomy software for industrial humanoids.
Teleop first, autonomy over time
Founded in December 2025 by chief executive Colin Webb, Avatar Robotics operates a hybrid workforce model: remote human pilots supervise robots that pack, sort and move items in live warehouses, while an AI layer collects the resulting demonstration data to grow autonomy over time. The company says its robots have already handled more than 900,000 products for a global beauty retailer and are now in a post-pilot expansion with a multi-billion-dollar warehouse operator.
Betting on services, not per-robot pricing
Avatar's approach is closer to a labour-hours contract than a hardware sale, giving customers on-demand access to bipedal robots without capital expenditure. It positions the startup against humanoid heavyweights such as Figure and Agility, whose leasing programmes rely on more autonomous stacks, and echoes recent moves by Rhoda AI to sell embodied intelligence as a subscription service.
Momentum in the humanoid Seed pool
The round adds to a busy summer for early-stage humanoid funding. TRM has recently covered MicroAGI's $55M seed in Germany and the ongoing Unitree STAR Market IPO. Investors say deployable service-model humanoids remain undercapitalised relative to the frontier-lab efforts of Tesla, Figure and Agility, opening room for smaller teams that ship real work today.
