B2U Storage Solutions has switched on Bexar Martinez, a 28 MWh grid-scale battery built entirely out of repurposed electric-vehicle packs, and started delivering ancillary services into ERCOT under CPS Energy's San Antonio service territory. Commercial operations began September 9, 2026, and push B2U's Texas portfolio above 50 MWh — the second of a planned wave of second-life projects on the grid this year.
What Is Under The Hood
The site is built with B2U's patented EV-Pack Storage cabinets, which slot decommissioned EV modules directly into the AC-coupled system without cell disassembly. The whole facility is financed by B2U Infrastructure Partners and qualifies for the domestic-content bonus under the Investment Tax Credit — a critical carrot as the US grid grows increasingly reliant on batteries and second-life projects fight to be treated as newly built assets for policy purposes.
Why Second Life Matters Now
B2U says it now manages more than 5,000 repurposed EV batteries across Texas and California, running roughly 100 MWh in solar-paired and standalone configurations. The Bexar Martinez ribbon-cutting arrives just weeks after the company's strategic tie-up with LG Energy Solution to feed retired LG cells into future BESS projects, and its Waymo robotaxi second-life deal earlier this year. Together, they mark second life moving from pilot to pipeline.

The launch lands in a Texas storage market that added 9.7 GWh of new BESS in the first quarter alone. It also underscores second life as an emerging revenue lane for auto OEMs sitting on aging fleets, from Nissan Leaf to Tesla Model S packs. Analysts see B2U's dual-use "EV-first" approach — a cell serves miles on the road, then MWh on the grid — as the model most likely to close today's cell-supply gap without new mining or capacity build.
