Palo Alto-based Buzz Solutions, the AI software company that helps utilities inspect, monitor and manage the electric grid, has closed an oversubscribed $20 million Series A led by Austin's S3 Ventures. The deal was announced August 4, 2026, with GoPoint Ventures increasing its stake and existing investors HearstLab and Blackhorn Ventures also participating.
PowerAI targets a $40B transmission inspection market
Buzz's flagship platform, PowerAI, transforms drone and helicopter inspection imagery into operational intelligence across transmission, distribution, substations and utility-scale solar. Trained on more than a decade of proprietary utility imagery, PowerAI processes over 5.8 images per second and delivers claimed reliability gains of 3-6% in SAIDI and SAIFI metrics — the industry's yardstick for outage frequency and duration.
Data-center load meets an aging grid
The raise lands at a critical inflection for the North American grid. AI data centers are accelerating electricity demand while utility-scale solar, EV charging and extreme weather are straining aging infrastructure. Federal regulators are forecasting an additional 38 GW of peak U.S. demand by 2028, and utilities are scrambling for asset-level visibility to keep pace.
"Utilities are under increasing pressure to improve grid reliability — while supporting AI-driven load growth, integrating renewable energy, and protecting communities from infrastructure-related risks," said Kaitlyn Albertoli, Buzz's CEO and co-founder. S3 Ventures general partner Eric Engineer added that the company's "highly-differentiated library of AI models — optimized via the industry's largest, truly-proprietary data set — deliver immediate operational value."
Blue-chip utility customers and 400% revenue growth
Buzz says it tripled its customer count and grew revenue 400% over the past year, with a customer roster that includes Dominion Energy, American Electric Power and the New York Power Authority. The company's PowerAI Pro tier layers AI-based RGB and thermal defect detection on top of GIS mapping, Skydio drone-cloud integrations and utility work-order systems.
The Series A will fund product engineering, an expanded go-to-market team and deeper enterprise deployments as Buzz pushes deeper into wind and hydro asset inspection. It arrives on the heels of a wave of AI-for-energy funding, including Base Power's $1B Series D for home battery-based grid support and Generalist AI's $400M robotics round earlier this summer.
