Cloudflare has given AI agents a stablecoin balance and a human-readable identity, closing a loop the company opened weeks earlier when it turned on its agent-first browser Kitesurf. Cloudflare Wallets and cloudflare.pay handles launched on Tuesday, extending the buy side of the agent-payments plumbing built on x402, the protocol that repurposes HTTP's 402 status code so machines can settle micropayments in stablecoins.
Account Wallets, Virtual Wallets And Guardrails
Cloudflare split the launch in two. Account Wallets belong to a Cloudflare account owner, who funds, delegates and withdraws. Virtual Wallets are provisioned by API key and assigned to individual agents, spending inside caps the owner sets — an allowance, an allow list and a maximum transaction size. “Want to give every employee a $100 per week budget for AI inference?” wrote agent-payments lead Will Papper. “Simply provision an Account Wallet with the right balance and create Virtual Wallets for each employee with that rule.” Anomalous spending trips a human review, according to the launch post.
Handles, Not Keypairs
The identity half of the launch is cloudflare.pay, where owners can reserve human-readable handles that agents attach to their traffic. An agent operated by, say, a research team can present as research.example.cloudflare.pay, giving merchants a link back to the organisation behind the request. “When an agent shows up at your door, you need to know who sent it,” said Cloudflare co-founder and CEO Matthew Prince in the announcement. Unidentified agents still get through, subject to Cloudflare's existing Turnstile and Bot Management checks.
x402 Passes 160 Million Transactions
The pipes are already carrying traffic. x402 has now settled 160.6 million transactions worth $41.2 million across seven chains and 18 tracked facilitators, according to Agent Economy — an average of about 26 cents per transaction. Cloudflare's documentation lists support for Base, Ethereum, Polygon, Optimism, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Solana, Aptos, Stellar and Sui, with USDC as the settlement asset and Coinbase's public facilitator wired into its examples. The Linux Foundation launched the x402 Foundation operationally on July 14 with 40 members; Cloudflare and Stripe sit alongside Visa, Mastercard, Google, AWS and Circle as premier members. Amazon Web Services and Coinbase wired x402 into CloudFront and WAF back in June for publishers charging agents in USDC on Base.
What's Live, What's Not
Handle reservations are live today. Funding, Virtual Wallet issuance and onramping are due “in the coming months,” per Cloudflare's press release. The post does not say which chains or stablecoins the wallets themselves will use, whether Cloudflare or a third party will custody the funds, what it will charge, or which onramp and offramp partners it is working with.
