Galaxy Digital on July 21, 2026 launched the Galaxy Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative — a $5 million programme to bankroll developers hardening Bitcoin against future quantum-computing threats. Grant applications open immediately.

Three pillars: grants, research and an advisory council

The initiative is built on three pillars: up to $5 million in developer grants for post-quantum work, a research programme run out of Galaxy Research, and a Quantum Advisory Council of academic and policy experts. Priority uses of grant funds include quantum-resistant signature schemes (relevant to proposals like BIP 360), wallet migration tools that let users move coins from legacy ECDSA addresses, and security audits of proposed cryptographic upgrades.

Q-Day and 6.9 million bitcoin at risk

Researchers, exchanges and the U.S. government have warned that a "Q-Day" — the moment a fault-tolerant quantum computer can break elliptic-curve cryptography — could arrive as early as 2030. Galaxy notes that up to 6.9 million BTC, worth roughly $461 billion at press-release-time prices, sit in address formats vulnerable to Shor's algorithm. Bitcoin's protocol itself is not being changed; this is developer funding to make sure a change is available when needed.

Institutional money starts to take quantum risk seriously

The Galaxy pledge lands alongside the Hewlett Foundation's $100M multi-year initiative on quantum and AI security and a wave of enterprise quantum roadmaps out of IBM (which just moved to acquire HRL Laboratories), Infleqtion and Saxon Q. Combined with Hitachi–Intel's silicon-spin qubit roadmap, the last month has been a marked shift in institutional appetite for putting real capital behind post-quantum work.
