GE Aerospace Designs Hypersonic Ramjet Using Generative AI

GE Aerospace says its in-house generative AI app produced a preliminary design layout for a hypersonic ramjet engine in seconds, work that normally takes weeks or months.

GE Aerospace says a team of researchers at its Research Center in Niskayuna, New York, has used a new generative AI application to produce a preliminary design layout for a hypersonic ramjet engine in seconds — work that engineers would normally complete over weeks or months. Announced on May 19, 2026, the demonstration positions generative AI as a working tool in early-stage jet engine design rather than a distant promise.

From months of studies to seconds

According to the company, the in-house app can generate hundreds of candidate designs in seconds while simultaneously accounting for the multiple flight conditions and scenarios a customer would typically outline. For the proof of concept, researchers compressed early design-study work that usually spans weeks or months into a single day, arriving at a comparable result.

"By using generative AI tools we can significantly reduce design cycle times, enabling us to be faster to test and ultimately faster to commercialize the best, most proven end product," said Joe Vinciquerra, general manager and senior executive director of GE Aerospace Research. He called the hypersonic ramjet study "a tremendous proof point that shows AI's potential to revolutionize the design process."

Why a hypersonic ramjet?

The team applied the tool to a dual-mode ramjet, a type of air-breathing engine associated with very high-speed flight. GE Aerospace framed the work against a U.S. Department of Defense that is prioritizing the speed of new developments, echoing a broader national-security push for faster autonomy and advanced systems also visible in the Pentagon's recent investments in autonomous defense technology.

Spillover into commercial engines

GE Aerospace said it is expanding the same generative AI design app to commercial programs, including the CFM International RISE program — a technology demonstration effort advancing open-fan architecture for next-generation narrowbody engines. RISE is run through CFM, a 50-50 joint company between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines.

A faster design cycle for aerospace

The announcement adds to a wave of AI moving deeper into heavy industry, from the growing role of AI and robotics across aerospace and defense to the rapid cadence of new generative AI model launches. GE Aerospace, which supports an installed base of roughly 50,000 commercial and 30,000 military engines, said placing such tools in engineers' hands today is key to keeping pace with demand.
