Google DeepMind on September 8, 2026 released AlphaGenome Atlas, a free-for-research platform that contains precomputed molecular-effect predictions for all 9 billion possible single-letter DNA variants in the human genome. The 1-petabyte dataset is more than 30x larger than the AlphaFold Database DeepMind expanded in 2022 and comes with a new AlphaGenome Variant Impact (AVI) score for rapid variant ranking.
What's In The Atlas
Atlas ships four interconnected resources: thousands of molecular-effect predictions per variant across hundreds of human and mouse cell types, a single AVI score per variant, AVI feature attributions that decompose the score into interpretable biological categories like chromatin accessibility and splicing, and a compendium of more than 2,500 recurrent DNA sequence motifs. The AVI combines AlphaGenome's non-coding predictions with AlphaMissense's protein-impact scores and works for both coding and non-coding variants.
Real-World Wins Already
Broad Institute researchers Laura Covill and Anne O'Donnell-Luria used the AVI score to prioritize a variant in DNM1 tied to epileptic encephalopathy that had been missed in prior rare-disease research; experimental screens confirmed a splice-site disruption. At the University of Exeter, Gareth Hawkes applied Atlas to whole-genome data from 54,000 UK Biobank participants and surfaced 22% more non-coding associations, pinpointing regulatory variants driving PLA2G7 and EGLN1 protein levels. Stowers Institute's Julia Zeitlinger used it to separate transcription factors that only affect DNA accessibility from those that also flip genes on and off.
Access And Guardrails
The Atlas website, AlphaGenome API and a Google Antigravity skill are open now for non-commercial research use; commercial access through Google Cloud Model Garden is coming. DeepMind explicitly notes AlphaGenome has not been validated or approved for clinical use — Atlas is a research prioritization tool, not a diagnostic. The release extends a run of DeepMind science launches following Genie 3 world models and comes as rivals like OpenAI push AI into mathematics.
