Hanwha Aerospace has unveiled the next evolution of its K9 self-propelled howitzer, pairing the platform with a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fire-guidance drone to shorten the sensor-to-shooter loop and give artillery units a persistent aerial observer for every fire mission. The concept was presented at the fifth K9 User Club, held from September 2 to 4, 2026 at the Estonian National Museum in Tartu, and drew delegates from the seven operator nations along with Spain and Sweden.
A VTOL Drone Wired Into The Fire-Direction System
Under the new concept, a VTOL drone launched from the K9 battery detects and tracks targets, generates real-time firing coordinates and pushes them straight into the howitzer's fire-direction system. The drone loiters over the impact area throughout the engagement, spotting corrections mid-mission and delivering battle-damage assessment as soon as the last round lands. Hanwha said the arrangement reduces reliance on forward observers operating in exposed positions and makes it easier to engage moving or time-sensitive targets.
Building On The K9A2 And Feeding A Wheeled Cousin
The drone-guided operating concept builds directly on the automated turret introduced with the K9A2, and Hanwha used the club meeting to outline concepts for wheeled artillery vehicles that reuse K9 sub-systems for lighter, more deployable formations. Executives also cited Hanwha's recent selection for the U.S. Army's Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) prototype programme as evidence that the K9 family is expanding into new mobility classes rather than just being modernised in place.
Predictive Sustainment Through TOMMS
Beyond the shooter, Hanwha detailed its Total Operation & Maintenance Management System (TOMMS), a digital platform that centralises procurement, logistics and spare-part tracking and ships with a catalogue of 700-800 commonly used components. The company plans to hook TOMMS into its Polish parts warehouse to shorten support cycles for European operators and use fleet telemetry to pre-position critical spares, moving from reactive to predictive logistics.

With Australia hosting the 2027 gathering, the K9 club has effectively become the industry's forum for turning operator feedback into product roadmap — and drone-guided fires are the marquee item this year.
