The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has issued a Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category for Heart Aerospace’s X1 demonstrator, clearing what is set to become the largest electric aircraft ever flown for piloted flight testing at Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York.
106-foot wingspan and 25,000 lb of electric aircraft
The X1 measures 106 ft across the wings, 76 ft nose-to-tail and grosses more than 25,000 lb at take-off — each of them a first for a fully electric fixed-wing platform. Heart says the aircraft has already completed structural, propulsion and systems testing, plus low- and high-speed taxi trials, ahead of first flight later this year.
Roadmap to the hybrid-electric ES-30
The X1 is a full-scale demonstrator, not a commercial prototype. Data from its flight campaign will feed into Heart’s planned 30-seat ES-30 hybrid-electric regional airliner — targeted at up to 125 miles of pure-battery range and up to 500 miles with the parallel hybrid-electric propulsion pack. Certification of the ES-30 is currently pencilled in for 2031, with an order book above $9 billion including commitments from United Airlines and Air Canada.
Electric aviation shifts from CGI to flight test
The FAA nod lands during Farnborough Airshow week — the same event at which Vertical Aerospace flew Valo publicly for the first time and GE Aerospace, NASA, BETA and Boeing crossed 30,000 feet with a hybrid-electric testbed. Together they mark electric aviation’s transition from CGI renders to actual regulator-signed flight programmes.
