
European defense AI company Helsing has unveiled Area 9, a new advanced research division, and launched RX-1, its first European robotics research platform. The announcement was made at the Paris Air Show on June 1, 2026, marking the firm's most public push beyond software into physical robotics hardware.
Area 9 — From Frontier Research To Operational Capability
Area 9 will be led by Helsing's Chief Scientist Antoine Bordes and is positioned as the company's bridge between frontier AI research and operationally deployable defense capabilities. Its first publicly disclosed project, Centaur, is an AI pilot already deployed on the Saab Gripen fighter and intended to underpin the upcoming CA-1 Europa autonomous fighter program.
RX-1: A Sovereign European Robotics Platform
RX-1 is a robotics research platform designed and built entirely in Europe, offering academic institutions a domestic alternative to systems imported from China or the United States. Helsing has confirmed two foundational academic partnerships: the robotics group led by Marco Hutter at ETH Zurich and INRIA Paris will both deploy RX-1 units to advance research at the intersection of AI and autonomous systems.
Why Sovereignty Matters
European defense officials have spent the past 18 months warning that reliance on non-European robotics hardware represents a strategic risk. Helsing's pitch with RX-1 is explicit: a high-performance, domestically manufactured platform that European labs and defense integrators can adopt without exposure to export controls or supply chain disruptions. The company says RX-1 is built for speed and ruggedness, with a focus on research workloads that previously ran on Unitree or Boston Dynamics hardware.
Integration With Existing Programs
The Area 9 launch follows news that Helsing's CA-1 Europa autonomous fighter will integrate HENSOLDT radar, optronics, electronic warfare and self-protection systems. Combined with other recent European sovereign AI deals, the announcement reinforces the continent's effort to assemble a defensible domestic stack across software, sensors and robotics. Helsing's $18 billion valuation following its $1.2 billion Dragoneer-led round gives it the balance sheet to fund both research initiatives in parallel.
