Horizon Quantum Holdings on June 11 said it will install its second quantum computer, an anticipated IonQ 256-qubit trapped-ion system, at its European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, expanding a hardware testbed it began building in Singapore in late 2025.
The System
The Dublin install centers on IonQ's sixth-generation, chip-based 256-qubit trapped-ion machine, which the company describes as among the most sophisticated commercial quantum systems globally. The system will be integrated with Horizon Quantum's Triple Alpha integrated development environment to expand support for trapped-ion devices and to enhance the real-time runtime capabilities of its execution stack as part of the company's mission to deliver hardware-agnostic tools for quantum software development.
Why Ireland
Horizon Quantum, founded in 2018 by CEO Dr Joe Fitzsimons, said Dublin offers a growing quantum ecosystem, strong university network and deep talent pool, both within Ireland and across the EU. "Expanding our hardware testbed to Ireland with the addition of a frontier system is a significant step forward for both our company in our mission to unlock broad quantum advantage and for the country in strengthening its quantum ecosystem," Fitzsimons said. Ireland's Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke tied the announcement to the country's Silicon Island semiconductor strategy, while IDA Ireland CEO Michael Lohan called it "a strong endorsement of Ireland's growing technology ecosystem."
Putting It In Context
Horizon Quantum's first hardware testbed, a multi-vendor superconducting system, came online at the Singapore headquarters in 2025. The new Dublin install adds a technologically distinct trapped-ion path so Horizon can co-design Triple Alpha against both architectures. The deal lands at a hot moment for quantum capital: IBM committed more than $10 billion to its quantum roadmap on June 2, and Pasqal just inaugurated Italy's first neutral-atom quantum computer at CINECA.
What Comes Next
Horizon Quantum, which began trading on Nasdaq in March 2026 after a SPAC merger, said it will expand its Irish science and engineering teams to operate the new system and will deepen engagement with universities, researchers and supply-chain partners across Ireland. The company has not disclosed a precise commissioning date, but the deployment is expected to land alongside continued investments in superconducting hardware and software tooling.
