Finland's IQM Quantum Computers will deliver South America's first on-premises superconducting quantum computer, an IQM Spark five-qubit system, to Brazil's Eldorado Research Institute in Campinas, the two organizations said on September 17. The deal comes with remote access to IQM's 54-qubit European cloud system and is aimed at seeding a quantum ecosystem across Latin America’s largest economy.

First On-Prem Quantum Computer In Latin America

The IQM Spark is a five-qubit development system designed for research and workforce training rather than large-scale problems, but Eldorado gets what its peers do not: physical hardware, not just cloud time. Delivery is set for Q1 2027, with the machine installed at Eldorado's Campinas campus, roughly 100 km northwest of São Paulo and directly next to the Unicamp research cluster.

Brazil's Quantum Play

"Brazil has the talent, the research base and the ambition to build a real quantum ecosystem," IQM CEO Jan Goetz said in the announcement. "What's been missing is direct access to real quantum computers." Eldorado Superintendent José Bertuzzo added that quantum computing can help tackle "some of the most complex technological and industrial challenges" facing Brazilian industry, including logistics, finance and materials science.

Cloud Access, Sovereign Ambition

The package pairs on-premises Spark hardware with cloud access to IQM's newer 54-qubit European system, letting Eldorado researchers benchmark local workloads against a much larger machine while sovereign policy conversations catch up. It fits a broader IQM playbook of seeding regional footholds after similar deployments in Germany, Japan (with TOYO Corporation), Poland and South Korea, and comes days after NVIDIA opened CUDA-Q Logical for fault-tolerant quantum research.
