Kawasaki Robotics is making a bold move into Physical AI, unveiling the RL030N, which it calls the industry's first 8-axis industrial robot designed specifically for AI-driven applications. The platform headlines a slate of new automation technologies the company will debut at Automate 2026 in Chicago, running June 22-25 at McCormick Place.
An extra axis built for Physical AI
Unlike conventional industrial arms optimized for fixed, repetitive cycles, the RL030N adds a seventh and eighth articulation axis to deliver markedly greater dexterity and flexibility than traditional 6-axis robots. Kawasaki says the design targets adaptive motion, obstacle avoidance, confined-space manipulation and complex motion planning, the kinds of tasks emerging AI software increasingly demands of hardware.
Crucially, the robot is powered by Kawasaki's open KRNX real-time control API, which lets external AI software, ROS environments, machine-learning systems, vision platforms and third-party orchestration tools drive the arm directly in real time. That open posture mirrors a broader industry shift toward treating robots as programmable bodies for AI "brains," a theme Kawasaki has been building since it opened its Silicon Valley Physical AI center.
Faster weld inspection with Pulseboard
Kawasaki will also demonstrate its patented Tool Tip Displacement Output Function, branded Pulseboard, inside a weld-inspection system developed with partner Fives DyAG. Combining a Kawasaki RS013N robot, a laser 3D profile camera and high-speed motion synchronization, the system continuously captures images in sync with the robot's tool-tip displacement instead of stopping for each frame, enabling up to 10x faster inspection of complex weld geometries.
Closed-loop dispensing and a wider portfolio
A second demonstration pairs Kawasaki's BU015X 7-axis robot with Coherix 3D laser-based Adaptive Process Control to apply sealant to a Ford F-150 door skin while measuring and adjusting bead placement up to 400 times per second. Kawasaki is rounding out the launch with the BA013L arc-welding robot and the heavy-payload MXP360L, which carries up to 360 kg. The push lands as rivals crowd the same show floor, from FANUC's Cobot and Go cells to Inbolt's vision-enabled programming and a wave of Physical AI tie-ups across the sector.
For Kawasaki, in industrial robotics since 1969, the RL030N is a statement that legacy automation vendors intend to own the hardware layer of the Physical AI era, not cede it to startups.
