KUKA has flipped the switch on its Automation Management Platform (AMP) at KUKA Toledo Production Operations, one of North America's largest automotive body-in-white plants and a wholly owned subsidiary of KUKA Systems North America. The open orchestration platform is now supporting live production alongside 285 robots and more than 60,000 connected devices, and marks the alpha release of what the German group calls its foundation for Physical AI in factories.
An AI layer on the Jeep line
KTPO is a 335,000-square-foot facility that builds more than 300 vehicle bodies per day, or about one every two minutes. Since 2006 it has produced the body-in-white for every Jeep Wrangler sold worldwide, and since 2019 for the Jeep Gladiator, cumulatively topping two million bodies. KUKA AMP now sits above that hardware, ingesting data from welding, joining and integration systems and using AI to help operators coordinate workflows and drive continuous improvement.

Open orchestration, not forklift upgrade
KUKA is pitching AMP as a way to extract more value from existing assets rather than a rip-and-replace platform. The system connects mobile robots, machines, software and data sources into a shared context layer, and lets customers plug in their own AI models to generalise across shifts and product changeovers. The company said the alpha at KTPO gives its software team a familiar environment to accelerate the roadmap toward general availability.
Physical AI moves into the plant
The go-live comes as competitors race to bolt AI onto factory floors. Earlier this summer AMD unveiled its Ryzen AI Embedded X100 and Kria AI SoM to challenge NVIDIA in robotics compute, while Germany's microagi raised a $55 million seed to train factory robots on customers' own data. KUKA's move plants a flag for the incumbents: the KUKA AMP alpha is being developed in the United States and is aimed at pulling AI out of pilots and into the daily grind of automotive assembly.
