Meta has acquired Stockholm-based AI startup Stilla.ai to accelerate its Meta Business Agent, the AI system that helps merchants automate conversations and transactions across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. Axios reported the deal on September 9; terms were not disclosed.
Eight months out of stealth, straight into Menlo Park
Stilla was founded in Stockholm in 2024 by former Shopify executives and only emerged from stealth in January 2026 with a $5 million pre-seed round. Its pitch is a memory-equipped agent that holds a business's operational context — inventory, policies, past customer threads — across sessions, rather than resetting each conversation. That persistent-context layer is exactly what Meta needs if a merchant's shopper can start a chat on Instagram, get a price on WhatsApp and complete checkout on Messenger.
One million businesses already on the tap
Meta has said the Business Agent now handles interactions for more than one million businesses. Every incremental point of automation on that base — order lookup, refunds, product discovery, booking, upsell — is revenue that used to leak to a human agent or a churned customer. The Stilla deal is small next to the multi-billion-dollar acquihires happening in frontier-model land, but it targets the layer where messaging becomes commerce.
Sweden as an AI hub
Meta said it plans to expand its presence in Sweden after the deal closes. That matters for a Nordic AI scene that has spent 2026 watching French rival Mistral raise a €3 billion round and UK-based humanoid startups get bought by U.S. platforms. Retaining Stilla's Stockholm team — with the acquirer's incentives — is a data point on the other side of that trend.
