Swiss physical AI startup mimic Robotics unveiled a full-stack dexterous manipulation platform combining the mimic hand M1, a 15-DoF tendon-driven robotic hand, with the mimic wearable U1 exoskeleton and a custom real-time middleware for Video-Action Model training.

mimic Robotics, the Zurich-based physical AI startup founded as an ETH Zürich spinoff, unveiled on July 18, 2026 a full-stack dexterous manipulation platform combining the mimic hand M1 robotic hand, the mimic wearable U1 passive exoskeleton and a custom in-house software stack. The Swiss company says the vertically integrated platform is engineered to solve one of robotics' biggest bottlenecks: collecting high-quality training data for AI models capable of human-level manipulation.

A 15-DoF tendon-driven hand designed around the human

The mimic hand M1 features 15 actuated degrees of freedom across 21 joints and uses tendon-driven actuation with motors located in the forearm rather than the hand itself. The company says the design provides high backdrivability, force sensing and durability while supporting payloads exceeding 25 kg in a cylindrical power grasp. Fingertip tactile sensors and synchronized wrist-mounted cameras stream detailed sensory data into mimic's Video-Action Model training pipeline.

A wearable that matches the robot's kinematics

The mimic wearable U1 is a passive exoskeleton that lets human operators demonstrate manipulation tasks while matching the M1 hand's kinematics. Because the wearable reproduces the robot's sensing configuration, demonstration data can be captured without conventional teleoperation latency or retargeting errors. "We never introduce this cross-embodiment gap in the first place," the company said. "We hold morphology constant across every phase of learning by running the entire pipeline on hands."

Middleware, teleop and a bet on Video-Action Models

mimic has also developed its own real-time middleware, teleoperation software and telemetry system. The company's custom "mimic-ipc" communication layer significantly reduces latency and jitter compared with conventional robotics middleware, enabling faster AI inference and more reliable robot control. mimic argues that solving dexterous manipulation on a fixed hand morphology is the fastest route to a true general-purpose robotics foundation model.
