French foundation model maker Mistral AI is in early talks to raise roughly €3 billion (about $3.5 billion) from a coalition of venture syndicates and sovereign investors, according to a Bloomberg report published Friday. The deal would value the Paris startup at €20 billion, nearly twice its September 2025 post-money price.
Physics AI Becomes The Pitch
The raise lands days after Mistral unveiled a new industrial push it calls physics AI, a software suite that lets engineers generate and simulate product design variations across computational fluid dynamics and other workloads. The lineup is built on a different architecture from a standard large language model, optimised to solve the partial differential equations that describe complex physical phenomena.
Mistral acquired Vienna-based simulation startup Emmi in May to anchor the effort, and its researchers have already released training datasets and papers covering CFD and even fusion research applications.
ASML, NVIDIA Likely To Anchor Again
The previous €1.7 billion Series C was led by ASML Holding, the world's top lithography toolmaker, with NVIDIA, Salesforce Ventures and several venture firms participating. Late-stage rounds typically include existing investors, and people familiar with the process expect ASML and NVIDIA to write follow-on cheques as Mistral chases the open-weight crown in Europe.
Racing OpenAI, Anthropic And Now Prometheus
The fundraising sprint comes as Mistral's biggest American rivals OpenAI and Anthropic file confidentially for IPOs. A new entrant, Jeff Bezos' Project Prometheus, just locked in $12 billion to automate the same hardware engineering tasks Mistral is now targeting. Mistral revenue today still flows mostly through Mistral Vibe, the Studio agent platform and Mistral Medium 3.5, its 128 billion-parameter open-weight model that ships in April.
