OpenAI is dramatically expanding ChatGPT for Teachers, adding 55 new U.S. school systems across 20 states in a cohort announced on August 26, 2026. The move brings the free program to more than 100 K-12 organizations across 30 states and puts the assistant in front of over 300,000 verified educators and staff.
Who is joining
The new cohort includes one in five of America's 20 largest public school districts and some of the country's most diverse systems, from Northside Independent School District in San Antonio to Virginia Beach City Public Schools and St. Cloud Area School District 742 in Minnesota. Districts get a common data privacy framework OpenAI negotiated across 16 states, a first for the industry, that gives administrators a single review path against student data protection statutes.
What teachers get
ChatGPT for Teachers is a stripped-down, districtwide edition of the assistant intended for lesson planning, differentiation, IEP support, parent communication drafting, grading assistance and administrative automation. It excludes student-facing use and turns off model training on district content by default. OpenAI says the product will remain free for verified U.S. K-12 educators through June 2028.
The competitive backdrop
The expansion lands as Anthropic, Google and Microsoft race for a foothold in American classrooms. Google is bundling Gemini into Workspace for Education, while Microsoft is pushing Copilot through district Microsoft 365 licences. OpenAI's play, which follows earlier enterprise skill packaging efforts, positions ChatGPT as the default AI back-office for the K-12 workforce well before the 2028 election cycle - and gives the company a large, professional user base at a formative moment for AI in schools.
