Amazon Web Services has flipped OpenAI's frontier models GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4 and the Codex coding agent to general availability on Amazon Bedrock, one month after the limited preview unveiled at What's Next with AWS. The launch puts OpenAI's production lineup inside enterprise AWS accounts with IAM, VPC isolation and pay-per-token pricing that matches OpenAI rates.
Two Frontier Tiers, One Codex
OpenAI positions GPT-5.5 as its hardest-reasoning model and GPT-5.4 as the best price-performance frontier option. Both are served through OpenAI's Responses API on Bedrock's new inference engine, which AWS says provisions capacity rapidly and queues rather than rejects requests during demand spikes.
Codex, the OpenAI coding agent now used by more than four million developers per week, runs on top of GPT-5.5 for long-horizon software workflows. Developers can drive it through the Codex CLI, the Codex desktop App and IDE plug-ins for Visual Studio Code, JetBrains and Xcode — all routing through Bedrock for model inference.

Data Stays In Region, Usage Hits AWS Commits
For regulated customers, all inference stays inside the Bedrock region you select, with no seat licenses and no per-developer commitments. GPT-5.5 launches in US East (Ohio), GPT-5.4 in US East (Ohio) and US West (Oregon), with Codex authenticated via the new Bedrock API keys or AWS SDK credential chain. AWS GovCloud (US-West) added GPT-5.4 on June 3.
A New Front In The Cloud Model Wars
The launch sharpens the cloud model rivalry. OpenAI's GPT family now sits alongside Anthropic Claude and Amazon's own Nova models in Bedrock's catalogue, the same week Anthropic filed confidentially for an IPO and just after Ramp's adoption data flipped Anthropic ahead of OpenAI in US business spend. With OpenAI's own IPO targeting September, putting Codex inside every AWS account is as much a distribution play as a technical one.
