San Francisco robotics startup PitPro Automation has installed its first commercial tire-changing robot at a Kal Tire retail location in Calgary, Alberta, announcing on 23 September 2026 what founder and chief executive Jeremy Conrad called the company's move from prototype to paying customer.
An oven-sized cell that swaps four tires in under 15 minutes
The PitPro system is a pair of enclosed cabinets, each roughly the size of a household oven, that flank a service bay. Inside each cell, a robotic arm and a 3D vision head identify lug nuts, loosen them, remove the wheel, and install a replacement or rotated tire. PitPro says the fully automated cell can change all four tires on a car in under 15 minutes and slots into an existing bay without disrupting other services in the shop.
Why Kal Tire and why Calgary
Conrad, who previously advised at Ford Pro and has been backed by Ted Cannis, says he chose to launch inside a large chain because standardized bay layouts and repeatable procedures make rollouts easier than one-off independent shops. Kal Tire is one of Canada's largest independent tire-service groups, with more than 250 retail stores plus a global mining tire business, and its Calgary store becomes the pilot for a technology PitPro hopes to expand across North American chains suffering from acute technician shortages.
