PsiQuantum has signed a new $125 million expanded agreement with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the U.S. government's largest performance-based commitment yet to the Palo Alto photonic-quantum startup and the biggest single award in PsiQuantum's history. The company remains one of only two firms in the final Stage C of DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI), the government's most rigorous review of commercial paths to utility-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing.
What the Award Covers
The performance-based tasking funds expanded testing and validation of PsiQuantum's hardware architecture, critical photonic components, system-level performance and software, including additional investments at its Milpitas, California headquarters and its site inside the Illinois Quantum & Microelectronics Park in Chicago. The award builds on a $31.8 million Stage C engagement signed in September 2025 and follows a proposed $100 million CHIPS and Science Act letter of intent with the U.S. Department of Commerce announced in May 2026.
Why DARPA Kept PsiQuantum in the Program
QBI applies pathway-agnostic, technology-neutral scrutiny to every remaining approach. Since PsiQuantum first joined DARPA's Underexplored Systems for Utility-Scale Quantum Computing (US2QC) program in January 2023, it has hosted dozens of DARPA-led onsite reviews, provided prototype design reports, exposed component-level test data, and given DARPA teams hands-on access to Construct, its fault-tolerant algorithm development stack. Only PsiQuantum and one unnamed peer survived into QBI's Stage C. "DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative is one of the most comprehensive and rigorous government programs for evaluating emerging technology that I have ever seen," PsiQuantum CEO Victor Peng said in the announcement.
How It Fits the Broader Push
DARPA program manager Micah Stoutimore said earlier this year that "it now seems likely someone will build a utility-scale quantum computer by 2033." PsiQuantum's own timeline points to that horizon: it has already laid out its million-qubit photonic roadmap, broken ground in Australia on its first utility-scale site alongside its Chicago build, and released its Omega silicon photonic chip fabricated with GlobalFoundries. The new DARPA money widens the validation surface of a company whose blueprint is now anchored by federal industrial policy.
What Comes Next
Under Stage C, DARPA will keep stress-testing PsiQuantum's designs and expanding the scope of on-site demonstrations through the coming year. The company has separately deepened partnerships with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and several National Laboratories, and it is preparing its Moreton Bay, Queensland site for operational use — a facility that broke ground in June 2026 and complements a broader wave of energy-and-compute infrastructure deals stretching from quantum labs to AI data centers.
