LiDAR maker Seyond used IROS 2026 in Hangzhou to press its case that automotive-grade sensors, not custom robotics LiDARs, will be the ones running the next wave of AMRs, forklifts and humanoids. The California-Suzhou company — formerly Innovusion — showcased the Hummingbird D1R and a roadmap of ultra-compact sensors designed for tight installation budgets.
Why Seyond Matters
Seyond has delivered more than a million automotive LiDARs, mostly through NIO and other Chinese carmakers. That volume is the pitch: the company argues it can bring "premium LiDAR performance at production scale," which is what stopped many robotics vendors from adopting high-resolution sensors in the past. The company frames the shift as moving robotics "from specialised applications toward broader real-world deployment."
Hummingbird D1R Details
The Hummingbird D1R is a compact LiDAR built for robots. Key specs published at IROS include a 140° × 100° field of view, close-range detection down to just centimetres, and a form factor small enough to fit in constrained mounting areas on delivery robots and humanoid torsos. Seyond is also developing even smaller sensors for space- and power-limited platforms.
Target Applications
Seyond named several categories where Hummingbird D1R is landing pilots: healthcare delivery robots handling medications and meals, sidewalk delivery robots, autonomous forklifts and AMRs, warehouse automation and humanoid platforms. Those overlap with the customer bases of ANYbotics' ANYmal patrols and Volvo Autonomous Solutions' driverless hauling fleets.
Competitive Field
Seyond is fighting for design wins against Hesai, RoboSense and Ouster, all of which have made robotics-first LiDAR plays this year. The advantage Seyond claims is a mature manufacturing base and automotive-grade reliability testing; the risk is that robotics is a lower-volume, higher-mix segment where Chinese rivals sell hard on price.
