SpaceX has unveiled its initial public offering filing, opening the books of the company that reshaped rocket technology and now has ambitions ranging from a Mars colony to AI data centers in space. A successful sale could value the company at a record-setting $1.75 trillion, a figure that would put founder Elon Musk on track to become the world's first trillionaire.

A record-breaking listing

The listing, disclosed in an S-1 regulatory filing on Wednesday, would immediately cement SpaceX as one of the world's most valuable publicly traded companies and the second in Musk's empire to surpass $1 trillion in market value, after Tesla. The targeted valuation, if achieved, would eclipse Saudi Aramco's 2019 debut, which set the record for the world's biggest IPO at about $1.7 trillion. The share sale is expected as early as June 11, with a listing aimed for the following day on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol "SPCX."

Starlink fuels the business

SpaceX has grown into the world's largest space business since its 2002 founding, largely by launching thousands of Starlink internet satellites. Most of its $18.67 billion in revenue last year came from a network of about 10,000 satellites providing broadband to consumers, governments and enterprises. Its pioneering use of reusable rockets transformed launch economics and forced rivals such as Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin to play catch-up.

An AI-heavy future

Much of SpaceX's projected growth hinges on artificial intelligence businesses, though its nascent xAI unit still loses money, according to the filing. SpaceX merged with xAI in a deal that valued the rocket company at $1 trillion and the Grok chatbot developer at $250 billion. The company said it is targeting a potential total market of $28.5 trillion across its businesses, with a majority of that possible revenue tied to AI and related infrastructure. The bet reflects a wider race to fund capital-intensive AI and robotics ventures, as seen in large funds backing physical AI startups and Musk-linked AI chip manufacturing efforts.

Questions for investors

Analysts noted that Musk's celebrity persona may matter more to some investors than SpaceX's fundamentals, given the absence of comparable companies to benchmark against. Concerns about his ability to juggle multiple firms with combined trillion-dollar valuations could weigh on sentiment. SpaceX plans to earmark a significant portion of shares for retail investors, with Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, Citigroup and JP Morgan serving as bookrunners. The filing lands during a pivotal week that also features a test flight of the next-generation autonomous aerospace systems ecosystem Musk's plans depend on.
