TetraGen Robotics Bags CAN$1.8M Seed To Scale AI-Driven Welding

Winnipeg-based TetraGen Robotics has closed an oversubscribed CAN$1.8 million seed round to accelerate deployments of its AI-driven autonomous welding cells across North American manufacturers.

Who's In The Round

The round was led by Calgary's StepChange Capital, with participation from Vancouver's Emend Vision Fund, a firm focused on industrial modernization. Jim Richardson of Winnipeg-based James Richardson & Sons also joined, though cheque sizes were not disclosed.

The Technology

Founded in 2022 by former University of Manitoba Intelligent Digital Manufacturing Lab head Matt Khoshdarregi, TetraGen pairs a conventional welding-robot chassis with proprietary 3D machine vision and AI. The company markets its cells as "manual programming-free," automatically generating weld paths and adapting to real-world part variation without an engineer touching a teach pendant.

Where The Money Goes

TetraGen will use the capital to expand engineering and commercial teams and to push deployments into heavy equipment, mining, defense manufacturing and structural steel, where part complexity and short runs have kept traditional welding robots on the sidelines. The Canadian Welding Bureau updated CSA W47.1 in 2025 to reflect the growing role of adaptive robotic systems.

Context

Canada's collaborative-robot market, valued around $52 million today, is forecast to grow to $129 million in the coming years, and vision-guided welding is one of the most active pockets of that spend. TetraGen's raise lands alongside a wave of physical-AI funding, including Discover Robotics' $100M angel-plus and Unit AI's $12M seed.
