xAI shipped Grok Imagine Image 2.0 on August 7, 2026, making the new model generally available as the Quality Mode inside grok.com/imagine and the company's iOS and Android apps. The release positions xAI's image line directly behind OpenAI's gpt-image-2 on both major public leaderboards.
Editing is the headline feature
Image 2.0 is built around editing as a first-class capability rather than a bolt-on. A magic-wand tool changes only the region the user selects, segmentation isolates precise areas for targeted modification, and background removal exports subjects with transparency for downstream software. Multi-reference generation accepts up to five input images in a single prompt, removing the manual compositing step earlier models required, and a Smart Resize feature recomposes an image across nine aspect ratios from 1:2 tall banners to 2:1 wide banners.

Ranking and availability
xAI reports Image 2.0 sits at number two in both the Arena text-to-image (1,320 points) and image-editing (1,439) leaderboards as of August 7, 2026 — behind OpenAI's gpt-image-2 in both. On the leaderboards, xAI's entries appear under the SpaceXAI branding, reflecting the corporate umbrella xAI operates under following the parent's June Nasdaq listing. There is no public API yet; access is bundled into Grok's paid subscription tiers.
Design workflows and templates
xAI also introduced templates that package common jobs — product shots, professional headshots, e-commerce listings, game assets and marketing posters — into ready-made starting points. Combined with sharper typography, the release targets the design and marketing use cases that OpenAI, Midjourney and Google have been fighting over.
