XDOF, the robot teleoperation data startup that only exited stealth in June, is in late-stage talks to raise a Series B at roughly a $1.2 billion valuation led by 8VC, according to a TechCrunch report on Sept. 4, 2026 - a stunning follow-on less than three months after its Series A close.

From $70M Series A To Unicorn Talks In Under 90 Days

XDOF was founded in 2024 by UC Berkeley researchers Philipp Wu (CEO) and Fred Shentu (CTO) around GELLO, a low-cost teleoperation rig that lets a human pilot a robotic arm remotely to generate training data. TechCrunch reported the startup's $70 million Series A in June, with Thrive Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Lux Capital and Spark Capital participating. The company was not planning to raise again this soon, but annualized revenue approaching $50 million and 20 customers - including several frontier AI labs - prompted VCs to preempt a new round.

The Scale AI For Physical Robotics

Investors describe XDOF as the Scale AI or Mercor of physical robotics: an outsourced data-supply chain covering teleoperation, on-body sensor capture, annotation and dataset delivery for frontier robot foundation models. Its first public dataset, ABC-130K, is the largest open-source teleoperation corpus with 130,000+ bimanual demonstrations across 195 tasks. The company plans to hire and train worldwide teams of teleoperators and egocentric operators wearing body sensors to capture household chores like folding clothes and flattening boxes.

Fresh Fuel For A Physical-AI Data Land Grab

An 8VC-led Series B would place XDOF alongside General Intuition's $320M and Mind Robotics' $400M as investors ratchet up bets on the picks-and-shovels of embodied AI. It also confirms the pattern behind Kinetic Blocks' open marketplace for robot data: whoever controls the physical-world dataset layer becomes as strategic as OpenAI or Anthropic are for LLMs. Terms are not final and XDOF and 8VC did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment.
