
Boston Dynamics is losing the architect of Atlas's behavioural stack. Scott Kuindersma, the company's vice president of robotics research, will join Google DeepMind in June, according to a confirmation reported by TechTimes on May 31. He is the second senior leader to make the same move in seven months and his exit comes just as Atlas enters commercial production.
The brain behind Atlas's leap to learning
Kuindersma led the reinforcement-learning and foundation-model work that transformed Atlas from a remarkable but hand-scripted demo platform into a learning system. Under his team Atlas began acquiring new behaviours – fridge lifts, parkour-style locomotion, dexterous manipulation – in weeks rather than quarters, a capability we covered in our recent Atlas reinforcement-learning dispatch.
A leadership drain
Kuindersma's exit follows Aaron Saunders, who spent more than two decades at Boston Dynamics – most recently as CTO – before joining DeepMind in November 2025 as VP of robotics hardware engineering. CEO Robert Playter retired in late February after more than 30 years with the firm, and CFO Amanda McMaster has been serving as interim CEO while the board searches for a permanent replacement. Together, Saunders and Kuindersma give DeepMind both the hardware architect and the AI lead behind Atlas's competitive moat.
SoftBank deadline complicates the picture
The talent loss arrives weeks before a shareholder deadline that could force a fundamental restructuring of Boston Dynamics' ownership. SoftBank-affiliated Hyundai Motor Group, which acquired the company in 2021, is reportedly weighing whether to consolidate Boston Dynamics into its own robotics holdings or take it public. Either path becomes harder without the research bench that defined Atlas's roadmap.
What it means for the Gemini Robotics partnership
Ironically, the same DeepMind that is poaching Boston Dynamics' senior researchers is also the company's chief AI partner: under a deal struck at CES, DeepMind's Gemini Robotics models power Atlas and Spot. The arrangement now sits on top of an unusually one-sided talent flow.
