3M (NYSE: MMM) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) on July 15 unveiled a strategic partnership that will see Microsoft's Azure cloud and AI infrastructure become the first announced hyperscale cloud provider to deploy 3M's Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) fiber connector technology, and 3M put Microsoft's AI stack to work across finance, sales, marketing and customer service.
EBO for AI-era fiber plants
EBO replaces the direct-contact interface used in traditional fiber connectors with an expanded-beam optical coupling that is faster to install, more tolerant of contamination and easier to maintain. That reduces cleaning cycles and speeds network buildouts inside dense AI back-end fabrics, where hundreds of thousands of optical links now handle GPU traffic.
Microsoft's early tests already look promising
Cliff Henson, corporate vice president of cloud supply chain and engineering at Microsoft, said early EBO deployments have shortened network buildout timelines and shown strong signal performance in live data-center conditions. 3M has scaled a dedicated production line for single-mode expanded-beam optical modules and helped set up an industry Multi-Source Agreement to standardise EBO across the ecosystem.
3M's own AI transformation
The reverse leg of the deal is bigger than a supply agreement. 3M's Global Business Services team is deploying Microsoft Frontier Company engineers to build an AI-agent-driven order-management workflow — credit checks, delinquency scoring and automated system updates with human-in-the-loop controls — that 3M says will accelerate cash flow and free staff for higher-value work.
