Airbus and Air Canada used Farnborough 2026 to launch a jointly funded Sustainability Co-Investment Platform, pledging up to CAD 13.7 million (about USD 10 million) to accelerate a commercial-scale sustainable aviation fuel industry inside Canada.
A Co-Investment Platform With A Canadian Focus
The two aviation partners will steer their combined capital into a jointly agreed SAF project, aiming to push it toward a Final Investment Decision. Both companies are pressing federal and provincial governments to align supportive policy with the private investment; if that comes together, the platform is intended to become a catalyst for the broader Canadian SAF ecosystem rather than a one-off.
Airbus Signs A Five-Year Leave Less Deal
Alongside the fund, Airbus signed a five-year agreement with Air Canada's Leave Less Travel Program, purchasing SAF environmental attributes tied to more than 60,000 litres of fuel for its first allocation. Air Canada will track Airbus corporate travel emissions and retire matching attributes on the company's behalf, helping to seed demand while domestic supply scales up.
Multi-Billion Economic Ripple
The launch was accompanied by a new Airbus-ICF macroeconomic study concluding that scaling Canadian SAF to meet 40% of national aviation fuel demand by 2040 could add USD 32 billion to Canadian GDP and support around 140,000 jobs across agriculture, forestry and urban industries. Air Canada's fleet renewal - built around fuel-efficient A320neo-family jets, the long-range A321XLR and the Canada-built A220 - anchors the demand side.
