Amazon Locks In Up To $8B Generac Backup Power Deal, Takes Warrant Stake

Amazon has signed a multi-year deal worth up to $8 billion for Generac backup power generators to firm up its AI data center fleet, taking warrants on 1.69 million Generac shares in the process.

Amazon Locks In Up To $8B Generac Backup Power Deal, Takes Warrant Stake

Amazon has signed a multi-year commercial agreement worth up to $8 billion with backup power specialist Generac Holdings (NYSE: GNRC), giving Amazon's hyperscale cloud arm a locked-in supply of standby generators for its rapidly growing AI data center fleet and handing Generac warrants to buy stock alongside the orders.

Deal shape: orders plus a warrant

Under the terms disclosed on Wednesday, Amazon will purchase up to $8 billion of Generac industrial power generation equipment over the life of the contract. In parallel, Generac issued Amazon warrants to acquire 1,693,745 shares of common stock at an exercise price of $200.93 per share. Generac shares jumped more than 40% in extended trading after the announcement, before settling roughly 20% higher, its biggest single-day move in years.

Diesel generator array powering hyperscale AI data center backup capacity

Why AI data centers need diesel

Every hyperscale AI campus needs several megawatts of on-site diesel and natural-gas generation to ride through grid disturbances, and generator lead times have blown out to two years or more as builders like Crusoe, Microsoft and Amazon race to stand up training clusters. Generac's industrial gensets scale from hundreds of kilowatts to 9 megawatts, and its modular paralleling systems let hyperscalers stitch multiple units into 30 megawatt-plus backup blocks.

Amazon's AI infrastructure spend keeps stacking

The Generac contract is the third multi-billion-dollar infrastructure commitment Amazon has anchored in as many weeks. It follows the A$32 billion Zerra DC Queensland hyperscale park and the just-announced $3.9 billion Crusoe Series F, and slots alongside Wednesday's U.S. House vote on the Ratepayer Protection Act, which now requires data centers to cover the full cost of grid upgrades tied to their loads.

What it means for Generac

The deal reframes Generac, a company most consumers know for residential standby units, as an infrastructure supplier to the AI economy. Analysts had already flagged Generac's industrial book as an underappreciated AI beneficiary; a $8 billion multi-year AWS commitment lands it firmly in the neocloud supply-chain conversation.
