Andreessen Horowitz Launches $1.1B Machine Age Fund For AI Hardware

Andreessen Horowitz has raised $1.1 billion for a new vehicle it calls the Machine Age Fund, its first fund dedicated exclusively to the physical layer of artificial intelligence: processors, memory, interconnects, storage, robots and the data-center systems that house them.

Software-First VC Firm Pivots To Hardware

The launch marks a striking shift for a firm best known for arguing that “software is eating the world.” In a blog post announcing the fund, a16z said its goal is to “open the throttle and accelerate the physical buildout of AI,” adding that faster systems, cheaper high-bandwidth memory, scalable interconnects, power-efficient edge devices and the cooling, materials and real estate to support them are all now bottlenecks. Ben Horowitz, Martin Casado, David George, Raghu Raghuram and David Ulevitch put their names to the launch.

Following The Money Into Physical AI

The Machine Age Fund lands as robotics startups have already raised more than $23 billion globally this year, closing in on all of 2025, and as chipmakers such as NVIDIA and Cerebras Systems race to feed hyperscale AI infrastructure demand. It also builds on a wider a16z push into critical AI systems, complementing the firm's earlier defense and infrastructure funds and its participation in rounds like the $250 million Instinct Series B and the $200 million Generalist AI round.

What It Signals For Founders

The fund reflects a growing recognition across Silicon Valley that AI's next constraints sit below the application layer: chip supply, memory bandwidth, energy delivery and manufacturing capacity. For founders in hard-tech categories that once struggled to match SaaS economics, the fund signals significantly deeper venture support — and puts a16z's balance sheet directly alongside industrial peers like Emerald AI and Lancium that are rewiring how AI power gets built.
