San Francisco-based satellite manufacturer Astranis announced on August 13 that it is developing Perceptor, a new line of spacecraft aimed at monitoring satellite activity in geostationary orbit — the increasingly contested 22,236-mile belt that hosts most of the world's mission-critical communications, weather and military satellites.
MicroGEO Bus, New Mission
Perceptor is built on Astranis' existing radiation-hardened MicroGEO platform, but swaps broadband payloads for optical sensors and gains electric propulsion sized for continuous repositioning. Each spacecraft can "traverse the full GEO arc, repositioning dozens of times over its mission lifetime," the company said, enabling multi-angle flybys that can "assess spacecraft capabilities, help troubleshoot anomalies on friendly spacecraft, and provide additional eyes in a domain where awareness has historically been limited."
From Broadband To Space Security
The launch marks Astranis' formal expansion beyond commercial connectivity into space domain awareness, joining a wave of commercial-defense convergence in orbit. The company already operates five GEO satellites, holds more than $1 billion of contracts and is the U.S. Space Force's PTS-G prime contractor and Resilient GPS partner.

GEO Is The New High Ground
Unlike low Earth orbit, GEO hosts a smaller but far more valuable population of spacecraft, many of them defense assets. As Chinese and Russian maneuverable satellites make the neighborhood more contested, the Pentagon is increasingly hungry for commercially owned sensors that can characterize unknown objects. Perceptor slots directly into that demand signal, following recent moves like Northrop's MRV GEO-servicing launch.
