Two semiconductor manufacturing pods from Washington, D.C.-based startup Besxar Space Industries hitched a sub-orbital ride on the first stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on July 5, 2026, opening the first of twelve dedicated Falcon 9 flights aimed at proving out semiconductor manufacturing in the vacuum of space.
Sub-orbital Fabships kick off a 12-flight series
The Starlink 10-50 mission lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral at 6:50 a.m. EDT (1050 UTC), placing 29 v2 Mini Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit. Alongside its primary payload, the Falcon 9 booster carried two Besxar 'Clipper Class' Fabships on an eight-minute, 19-second climb above the 100 kilometer Karman Line before returning to a drone-ship landing.
Why space for chip substrates
Besxar plans to use the vacuum of space to produce ultra-pure substrates and precursor materials that push past the yield ceiling of terrestrial fabs. "We're reaching the limits of what can be built on Earth. AI data centers are straining against power and cooling limits, silicon is nearing its physical edge, and fabrication plants can't achieve the vacuum or yields that next-generation materials demand," said founder and CEO Ashley Pilipiszyn, a former OpenAI executive.
Backers and roadmap
The Clipper Class test pods are roughly the size of a microwave and are designed to iterate quickly across launch and reentry cycles. Besxar disclosed 12 booked Falcon 9 rides in October 2025 and counts NVIDIA's Inception program as a backer alongside SpaceX. Pilipiszyn compared the initial flights to "the ultimate egg drop challenge," aimed at showing wafers can survive rocket launch and reentry before layering on in-space processing.
Space becomes part of the chip supply chain
The mission was SpaceX's 62nd Starlink delivery of the year, and the first commercial use of a Falcon 9 booster as a semiconductor process test bed. If Besxar's substrate work translates from suborbital hops to orbital production, it would give hyperscale AI infrastructure operators a new lever for materials that Earth-bound fabs cannot yet make.
