BMW Turns On Physical AI In Europe With Hexagon's AEON Humanoid In Leipzig

BMW Group has switched on its first European humanoid-robot pilot at Plant Leipzig using Hexagon Robotics' full-size AEON humanoid, and opened a new Center of Competence for Physical AI in Production to scale robotics across all 30 of its global plants.

The AEON robot on the line

Zurich-headquartered Hexagon Robotics — the humanoid unit of measurement giant Hexagon — designed AEON with 22 sensors and 34 degrees of freedom, giving it the dexterity to install trim components and the precision to run integrated laser-scanner quality checks on vehicle doors. Crucially for a 3-shift factory, AEON can swap its own battery in under 30 seconds, dispensing with charging downtime that has bogged down earlier pilots.

Building on Spartanburg

The Leipzig launch follows a successful humanoid trial at BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina and adds physical AI to the same site that is racing against Chinese carmakers standing up humanoid subsidiaries. BMW's new Center of Competence, headed by former manufacturing digitalisation VP Milan Nedeljković's team, will curate reference use cases and share code across plants — an industrial-strategy signal that the group is treating humanoids as a durable programme rather than a demo.

Automotive humanoids race Chinese incumbents

The BMW news lands as BYD unveiled its own humanoid at Di Space Zhengzhou and Chinese carmakers moved into factory-scale VLA orders with UBTech, Galbot and AgiBot. Between Hexagon-BMW in Germany, SoftBank taking a majority stake in 1X Technologies, and Motion Humanoids' Brussels pre-seed, Europe is beginning to close the humanoid gap.
