
BYD has confirmed it will start producing sulfide-based all-solid-state EV batteries in 2027, ramping to mass production by 2030, according to comments from BYD Group chief scientist Lian Yubo and reporting by Electrek on June 1, 2026. The Shenzhen-based EV giant is one of a growing cohort of Chinese automakers — including SAIC Motor, Changan and Chery — racing the same 2027 launch window.
Sulfide chemistry, premium first
BYD's all-solid-state cells will use sulfide composite electrolytes paired with high-nickel cathodes and silicon-based anodes, targeting energy density around 400 Wh/kg and ranges exceeding 1,000 km on a single charge. The first vehicles to use the new cells will likely come from BYD's premium sub-brands — Yangwang, Denza and Fang Cheng Bao — before trickling down to mass-market models toward the end of the decade.
SAIC, Changan and Chery line up alongside BYD
SAIC Motor, which already produces the world's first mass-produced semi-solid-state EV — the MG4 — is preparing all-solid-state cells with partner Qingtao Energy for 2027 mass production at over 400 Wh/kg. Changan plans to deploy its Golden Bell all-solid-state battery in prototypes this year en route to 2027 mass production, with claimed CLTC range above 1,500 km. Chery has also unveiled all-solid-state cells targeting the same density tier. Dongfeng Motor is testing prototypes equipped with 350 Wh/kg solid-state cells.
Sulfide vs. liquid lithium-ion: complement, not substitute
Lian framed solid-state cells as complementary to liquid lithium-ion and sodium-ion chemistries rather than a replacement — a notable position from a company that just released its Blade Battery 2.0, an LFP pack rated above 1,000 km of CLTC range. BYD CTO Sun Huajun has previously argued that sulfide electrolytes last longer and are more stable than today's liquid Li-ion cells, enabling safer fast charging and longer driving range.
Why 2027 matters
Outside China, the only Western data point of similar substance comes from Mercedes, which last year drove a modified EQS over 1,200 km using cells supplied by U.S. startup Factorial Energy. China's 2027 cluster — BYD, SAIC, Changan and Chery — would mark the first time mainstream OEMs ship all-solid-state cells in production EVs, escalating pressure on Japanese, Korean and U.S. battery players. The push aligns with broader Chinese capacity moves like Donut Lab's five-minute-charge solid-state pack and ProLogium's $3.8B Nasdaq SPAC listing.
