BYD Energy Storage on September 16, 2026 launched the GC Block, a standardized station-level battery storage unit that scales up to 62 MWh in a single module and is engineered for the gigawatt-scale grid-forming projects reshaping utility and data-center power markets.
From containers to power-station modules
The GC Block reflects a shift away from individual containerized battery cabinets toward larger, repeatable modules that behave more like traditional power-station blocks. BYD is offering three configurations: a small 7.5 MW / 15.5 MWh two-hour unit, a medium 7.5 MW / 31 MWh four-hour unit, and a flagship 10 MW / 62 MWh six-hour block. All are built on the company's 1,980 Ah Blade cell, the same LFP chemistry used across its EV and stationary businesses.
Alongside the block, BYD unveiled the GC Flux PCS 2.0 power-conversion system (1.25–15.6 MW per unit, 99.5% peak conversion efficiency) and the GC Master EMS 2.0 energy management platform, which the company says delivers 98.5% AI forecasting accuracy for dispatch and market participation.
Standardization for GW-scale plants
BYD framed the GC Block as a way to compress the design, procurement and installation cycle of GW-scale storage plants. For a gigawatt-class project, the company says the standardized architecture can reduce battery-management complexity by 69.4%, cut installation and commissioning work by more than 18%, and reduce ongoing maintenance workload by over 60% versus stitching together individual container-scale systems.

Grid-forming, data centers and renewables plus storage
The launch is aimed squarely at four fast-growing end markets: utility-scale standalone storage, renewables-plus-storage pairing, data-center power backup and firming for high-power EV charging corridors. BYD is positioning the GC Block as grid-forming — able to synthesize its own frequency and voltage reference — a capability increasingly required as high-renewables grids lose synchronous inertia.
The unveiling comes as BYD Energy Storage sits near the top of global ESS shipment rankings and continues to expand outside China. The company is delivering the 11.275 GWh Sultan Al Ahmadi project in the United Arab Emirates and, through its solid-state battery roadmap unveiled earlier this month, signalling a long dual-track push in both stationary and mobile storage.
Competitive pressure on the storage stack
The GC Block lands against a wave of GW-scale hardware from Chinese rivals such as CATL and international vendors racing to serve the AI data-center buildout that has pushed hyperscalers to sign multi-gigawatt storage contracts. Analysts have warned that Chinese authorities may throttle new cell-factory approvals to prevent oversupply, but BYD's own capacity — combined with its Blade cell in-house — leaves it positioned to absorb a large share of near-term GW-scale demand.
